| Item Description :The American Publishing Company, 1897. FIRST EDITION, first state. (First Issue with "11" at bottom of page 161 as called for by BAL.) Exceedingly heavy book. Good overall condition, blue cloth with gilt and color embossed decoration, gilt decoration and titles on spine, wear and fraying to spine-ends and corners, rubbing to panels, hinges cracked, some foxing mostly on frfront endpaper and frontispiece detached but in place, closed tear and few edge stains on table of contents. Portrait frontispiece from a photograph of the author and 192 other illustrations by eleven notable illustrators including A. B. Frost, Peter Newell, Dan Beard, plus photographs. Twain's fifth and last travel narrative (beginning in Vancouver and ending in Cape Town, by way of Australia and India.) He gives a wonderful account of his travels, the people met along the way, the sights seen, and with a zest and spirit unique to one of America's greatest authors and humorists. Considering the antiquity and massive text block, the book is in overall very good condition. The illustrations are extensive and vary in size and style and add immeasurably to making this an immensely readable narrative. Spectacular Twain first edition, excellent investment. 712 pages.
