From the Forward, by Tolkien's son, Christopher Tolkien, "THE HOBBIT as first published on 21 September 1937, and this edition commemorates its fiftieth anniversary. Rayner Unwin has suggested to me that it would be of interest to include in it some unpublished or little known illustrations by my father, and also the sole page that survives today of the original draft of the first chapter, An Unexpected Party. That particular page was preserved, no doubt, because on it there was also the first sketch of Thror's Map . . ." If you read aloud, to someone you care for, The Hobbit and the succeeding three volumes of the Lord of the Rings, you'll likely be together for a long, long time. An excellent addition to anyone's collection of favorite books to be re-read, care about, and remember again. Wonderfully numerous illustrations and maps you might have never seen because they didn't appear in earlier versions. 317 pages.Images :
