Charles Dickens, author of such literature classics as A Christmas Carol; Pickwick Papers; Great Expectations; etc. pen-name "Boz", was the foremost English novelist of the Victorian era, as well as a vigorous social campaigner. Considered one of the English language's greatest writers, he was acclaimed for his rich storytelling and memorable characters, and achieved massive worldwide popularity in his lifetime. From the beginning of his authorial career, Dickens wished to be an editor. This ambition fully realized with the weekly publication of HOUSEHOLD WORDS, earlier editorial attempts not succeeding as hoped. During its run, he made over 180 contributions including the first appearance of A CHILD'S HISTORY OF ENGLAND and HARD TIMES. Household Words was an English weekly magazine edited by Charles Dickens which took its name from the line from Shakespeare "Familiar in his mouth as household words" — Henry V. It was published between 1850 and 1859. The journal contained a mixture of fiction and nonfiction. A large amount of the non-fiction dealt with the social issues of the time. A number of prominent novels were serialized in Household Words including, : Hard Times by Charles Dickens; Cranford and My Lady Ludlow by Elizabeth Gaskell; The Song of the Western Men by Robert Stephen Hawker; North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell. Other contributors to Household Words included Adelaide Anne Procter (under the name "Mary Berwick") and James Payn. An exceedingly rare collection. 2456 pages. Images :
