Item Description :

Bobbs-Merrill Co. Indianapolis. 1901. Illustrated by W.W. Denslow. Overall, very good condition, great shape considering it is from 1901. Hard cover book with color illustration on front cover. Color pictorials on front & back endpapers that say "Her Majesty and the Pewter Band." Color illustrations by original Baum illustrator Denslow, more than 60 in all! Illustrations are in orange, green, & black, as was their previous book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Overall a very nice and relatively very good consition volume usually not found as such. Spine is sturdy, some wear at the top & bottom edges, one page is separated from binding, some ripped most of the way down near the binding and on the edges, some others have small tears near the edges, some pages have stains; cover is starting near binding; corner wear; covers have minimal staining; pages show uniform aging/browning; former owner inscription. Very scarce, early L. Frank Baum, famous author of the Oz collection of books. Written to accompany the Wizard of Oz, this was not commercially successful (hence it's extreme scarcity) and was to be Baum's and Denslow's last collaboration. William Wallace Denslow (1856-1915) was an illustrator best known for his work with L. Frank Baum. Born in Philadelphia but, by the 1890s, he was based in Chicago, where he met Baum. Besides the best known of all, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, books written by Baum and illustrated by Denslow (copyrights generally being held jointly) included: By the Candelabra's Glare; Father Goose; His Book; and Dot and Tot in Merryland. After Denslow quarreled with Baum over royalty shares from the 1902 stage adaptation of The Wizard of Oz, for which Baum wrote the script and Denslow designed the sets and costumes, Baum determined not to work with him again.
