| Item Description :Bobbs Merrill, 1939. FIRST EDITION, thus PHOTOPLAY MOVIE EDITION, pictorial endpapers from the legendary film. This is the only edition containing the original text on which the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movie is based. The copyright says 1899 up to 1903. But this is first edition 1939 movie edition. A larger edition than even the original, one of the genre's most expensive editions. Very good green cloth, 8 color plates with orange as the primary color by original Oz illustrator Denslow. The spine has black fields around the printing. The MGM movie movie tie-in edition of 1939, both endpapers with scenes from the movie. All 8 plates by Denslow and 8 b & w plates. Good tight volume with wear particularly at board points and spine ends and mild soil on rear cover and a few tiny light spots on front cover. Hardcover with green cloth boards, black letter on the front, and black and gold lettering on the spine. This edition has pictures from the 1939 movie picture on the endpapers and is illustrated with many black-and-white drawings and 8 color plates. The book is printed on off-white paper that has tanned slightly over the years. Two pages near the front have a crease halfway down the middle -- this appears to be a printing defect rather than a sign of use. A gift inscription is written on the first blank page. One page has a small tear, a few pages are nicked on the bottom edge, a handful of pages have been poked, and a few pages have a faint gray smudge. Very strong and tight binding, edges scuffed and worn, 1/2" tear in the cloth along the edge of the front board and spine. Overall, a very nice collectible copy of a most desirable and increasingly scarce classic. 208 pages. Images :
