Very good condition, edgewear and some rubbing to boards, white spine titling somewhat faded. Internally in very good condition, with binding strong and square and hinges intact. Minimal age-toning, no dj. Overall a good solid copy of an increasingly scarce classic. Cozzens (1903-78) wrote major novels in the Thirties, Forties, Fifties, and Sixties, leaving a body of fiction unsurpassed in its fidelity to experience. A gauge of his achievement is provided by the frequency of best in descriptions of Cozzens's work: the best American novel about the law; the best American novel about World War II; the best American novel about the minisitry." (Matthew J. Bruccoli, Introduction, Selected Notebooks) Cozzens first attracted critical attention with his novella S. S. San Pedro (1931) and Guard of Honor (1948), about his World War II experiences, won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1949. Other excellent novels include The Last Adam (1933), Men and Brethren (1936) and By Love Possessed (1957). 10,000 copies of the First Printing. 301 pages.
